New documentary on Modigliani narrated by Jeanne Hébuterne
A new docufilm directed by Valeria Parisi and co-written with Arianna Marelli, based on a subject by Didi Gnocchi, explores the life and work of Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920). The documentary takes an original perspective by centering on Jeanne Hébuterne, Modigliani's last companion, who committed suicide two days after his death at Hôpital de la Charité in Paris on January 24, 1920. At the time, Jeanne was pregnant and left behind a one-year-old daughter. The film opens with Hébuterne's figure and a reading from "Les Chants de Maldoror," the book Modigliani always carried. It is part of the 2020 season of the "La Grande Arte al Cinema" cycle. The film draws inspiration from the exhibition "Modigliani – Picasso. The Primitivist Revolution" curated by Marc Restellini, opening at the Albertina in Vienna in September 2020. It features images of works exhibited at the Albertina, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, museums and collections in Paris, and the major exhibition "Modigliani e l’avventura di Montparnasse" at the Museo della Città di Livorno.
