New Civic Museum dedicated to Sebastiano Tusa opens in Procida

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Nuovo Museo Civico di Procida will be inaugurated on May 16, 2022, in honor of Sebastiano Tusa, the Sicilian marine archaeologist who tragically lost his life in the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 disaster on March 10, 2019. Housed in the former Conservatorio delle Orfane, this museum is a key feature of Procida's designation as the Italian Capital of Culture 2022. It presents Mycenaean artifacts from Vivara, geological exhibits, and the maritime heritage of Procida, enriched by local contributions. The museum stems from the 2017 TERRA initiative, a collaboration between the Comune di Procida, University of Naples Federico II, and University of Suor Orsola Benincasa, featuring three main sections: Ancient History, Archaeological Excavations of Vivara, and Sea. The opening will commence with a conference at 10:00, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 13:15, attended by Valeria Patrizia Li Vigni.
