festival-fair · 2026-04-22

New City Art Fair launched as a new fixture during Armory Week in New York City, running from March 7 to March 11, 2012, at 529 West 20th Street on the second floor. Organized by hpgrp Gallery, the fair featured eleven galleries showcasing Japanese contemporary artists. Among the participants, eitoeiko gallery presented works by three young artists who attended in person to discuss their pieces. Yuki Hashimoto created clay figures attached to cellphone bodies, each with detailed profiles; for instance, #15 YOSHIE is a bilingual office worker who recently married and plans to become a housewife, inspired by Andrew Wyeth's 1948 painting 'Christina's World'. Shusuke Ao exhibited 'FSS-X00', an airplane depicted in reverse, aiming to place viewers outside technology to ignite imagination. Masaru Aikawa displayed a CD project with replicas of disks labeled as songs by artists like Queen or Jimi Hendrix, but upon listening, they revealed his own off-key humming. The fair highlighted diverse artistic responses, from kawaii aesthetics and anime influences to reflections on high-tech society, adding to the vibrant Armory Week lineup just blocks from the Independent fair.
