New Children's Museums Expand Nationwide with Focus on STEAM and Community
kidSTREAM is poised to open in Ventura County, aligning with a nationwide surge in the establishment and expansion of children's museums. The Utica Children's Museum, located in Utica, New York, resumed operations last May in a new 14,000-square-foot space that includes a two-story climbing structure and five themed galleries, such as World Market and Let's Experiment, focused on STEAM education. Initially launched in 1963 as the Junior Museum of Oneida, it has undergone several relocations. Meanwhile, the Children's Museum of Franklin in Massachusetts, created by mothers Erin Gallagher and Meg Hagen, debuted last September in a repurposed farm and garden center, featuring 12 exhibit areas within 6,400 square feet. This museum promotes STEM activities, art, and sensory-friendly hours, with an additional 4,000 square feet of outdoor space anticipated by late spring. Other notable developments include the Old Courthouse in St. Louis reopening in May after a $27.5 million renovation, the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut tackling rising sea levels, and Ai Weiwei's largest U.S. exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum. These projects are designed to captivate young audiences and adapt to evolving needs.
