New Certification SGPI01:2024 Launched for Italian Cultural Heritage Management
A new certification standard, SGPI01:2024, has been introduced in Italy to improve the management and valorization of cultural heritage. Promoted by Certiquality (founded in 1989 by Federchimica and Assolombarda, chaired by Marco Martinelli) and the Stati Generali del Patrimonio Italiano (SGPI), the standard aims to integrate economic valorization, conservation, and public accessibility. It targets all public and private entities that own or manage cultural or landscape assets, including local administrations, associations, foundations, and companies. The certification was presented in Florence at Palazzo Guadagni Strozzi Sacrati, headquarters of the Tuscany Region, which sponsors the initiative. Unlike existing legal constraints under the Codice dei Beni Culturali (Law 42/2004), SGPI01:2024 introduces a 360-degree management system that goes beyond regulatory compliance. Certification is carried out by CQY through independent third-party audits by specialized auditors. Proponents argue that Italy's vast cultural heritage cannot be managed solely by the state, referencing the new Italia in Scena law. Cristina Manetti, Tuscany's Culture Assessor, emphasized that economic sustainability, usability, and conservation are the three pillars of the certification, with independent controls ensuring excellence. The certification focuses on management processes, not products, and aims to help entities attract funds and donations while preserving cultural identity.
