New book traces van Gogh's footsteps through photography
A new book, 'Sulle tracce di Van Gogh' (On the Trail of Van Gogh), published by Giunti, explores the places frequented by Vincent van Gogh through photographs and critical essays. Curated by art historian Gloria Fossi, the volume originated from a collaboration with photographers Mario Dondero and Danilo De Marco, who began the project in 1990 for the centenary of van Gogh's death. The book includes both original photographs from the 1990s and new research, covering locations in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and France. Fossi discusses the journey, the challenges of photographing sites like Dr. Gachet's house in Auvers-sur-Oise, and her ongoing research into van Gogh's starry skies, arguing that his depictions were informed by contemporary astronomy rather than hallucinations. The book is dedicated to Dondero and De Marco.
