New Book 'I'm So Happy You Are Here' Highlights Japanese Women Photographers from 1950s to Present

Aperture's 2024 publication 'I'm So Happy You Are Here' offers a comprehensive examination of Japanese women photographers spanning seven decades. Edited by Pauline Vermare and Lesley A. Martin, the 440-page volume features contributions from photography critic Takeuchi Mariko and scholars Carrie Cushman and Kelly Midori McCormick. The book presents work from 25 practitioners through illustrated portfolios and three major essays that challenge established narratives in Japanese photographic history. Additional context comes from an illustrated bibliography by Marc Feustel and Russet Lederman, plus translated critical writings from Japanese experts including Kasahara Michiko and Fuku Noriko.
