New Book Fair 'testo' to Launch in Florence, Focusing on Publishing Process

A new book fair called 'testo [Come si diventa un libro]' will open in Florence on March 20, 2020, at the Stazione Leopolda. Conceived by Pietro Torrigiani and Maddalena Fossombroni, owners of the Todo Modo bookstore, the fair shifts focus from authors and publishers to the entire book production chain, including translators, graphic designers, editors, and other behind-the-scenes professionals. The format is supported by Pitti Immagine, which designed a custom layout with specially designed tables and lighting. Seven curators—Luca Briasco, Andrea Gessner, Beatrice Masini, Giovanna Silva, Chiara Carpenter, Leonardo Luccone, and Riccardo Ventrella—each oversee a 'station' dedicated to a different stage of a book's life, from editing to reader reception. Exhibitors are limited to 30 titles on display, and all publishers, regardless of size, have equal stand space, promoting democratic participation. A large bookstore will run the length of the venue, featuring books selected by curators in seven categories such as 'best-produced books' and 'most functional books.' The fair aims to educate the public about the costs and labor behind books, countering the common complaint about high cover prices. Torrigiani expressed optimism about independent bookstores, citing Todo Modo's success through events, a bistro, and community engagement.
