New book explores Pino Pascali's American dream in a single drawing

publication · 2026-05-04

A new publication, "SUPER Pino Pascali e il sogno americano" by Roberto Lacarbonara and Giuseppe Teofilo (Skira, 2017), centers on a single pastel drawing by Pino Pascali from 1964-65, held in a private collection in Bari. The drawing, damaged during transport from a previous exhibition, was restored by Teofilo. It features dollar signs and a deconstructed Abraham Lincoln from the $5 bill, revealing Pascali's ironic take on American cultural colonization. Lacarbonara contextualizes the work within the 1960s dialogue with mass media and Pop Art, while also connecting it to contemporary figures like Donald Trump. The book repositions the drawing within a broader archive of American imagery, from Uncle Sam to Trump, filtered through Pascali's playful Mediterranean sensibility. The volume includes a postface by collector Francesco Paolo Sisto.
