New book challenges photography's origin story with Francesco Malacarne
A new book by Anna Bedon and Italo Zannier argues that Francesco Malacarne (1779-1855), a contemporary of Niépce, may have produced clearer proto-photographs using papirografia and heliography before Niépce's 1826-27 image. The publication, 'Francesco Malacarne' (Quinlan, 2019), reopens the debate on photography's invention. Meanwhile, Mack Books released Guido Guidi's 'In Veneto, 1984-89' alongside a show at Museo Casa Giorgione, Castelfranco. Silvana Editoriale published 'Francesco Radino – Fotografie 1968-2018' for his Mudima Foundation retrospective. Il Mulino issued Massimo Baldini's 'Gli italiani', inspired by Robert Frank's 'The Americans', with texts by Claudio Giunta. Fondazione MAST released 'Foto/Industria 2019', a box set of 12 booklets documenting the fourth edition of the Biennial of Photography of Industry and Work, focused on the Technosphere, with exhibitions by Burtynsky, Baichwal, de Pencier, Carmi, Claerbout, Ghirri, Linke, Bandai, Gafsou, Jasse, Kertész, Renger-Patzsch, and Syjuco.
