New artist residency launches in Pietrelcina, birthplace of Padre Pio

artist · 2026-05-05

A new artist residency has opened at Tenuta Fontana dei Fieri in Pietrelcina, a small town in the province of Benevento known as the birthplace of Saint Pio and a major center of religious tourism. The residency was conceived by artist Gaetano Russo, who was inspired by a stable built from ecological materials—straw, clay, and wood—on the property. He proposed the idea to the Boffa family, owners of the estate, who immediately embraced it. The first residency took place from July 14 to 22, featuring artist Paola Ruggiero (born 1971, Salerno). The next session begins August 20 with photographer Matilde Montanari (born 1979, Bologna). The 15-day program allows artists to collaborate with local artisans specializing in wood, ceramic, and stone craftsmanship. According to curator Gaetano Russo, the residency aims to foster dialogue with the territory's culture, including artistic craftsmanship and enogastronomy. It offers artists an opportunity to work outside their studios in a natural and spiritual setting, while also engaging the local community through open studio events. Future plans include inviting local artisans to use the space for artistic and exhibition projects.
