institutional · 2026-05-15

In 2028, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will merge with Neue Galerie New York, incorporating more than 600 pieces of early 20th-century Austrian and German art, including Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. The new institution will be known as the Met Ronald S. Lauder Neue Galerie, with Ronald Lauder and his daughter Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer providing artworks and a projected $200 million endowment. The Fifth Avenue location of the Neue Galerie will maintain its identity. In other news, Galeries Lafayette is set to close its flagship store in Beijing, which opened in 2013, amid declining luxury spending in China. Additionally, the Frick Collection has secured a three-year sponsorship from Louis Vuitton for exhibitions and programming. Jonathan Anderson debuted his Dior Cruise collection at LACMA, inspired by Marlene Dietrich and Alfred Hitchcock, while over 80 galleries will participate in the Tribeca Gallery Night on May 15. Christie's has enlisted Nicole Kidman to auction S.I. Newhouse's $100 million Brancusi, and Gagosian Hong Kong has launched 'James Turrell: Lifting the Veil.' Casa Tua plans to introduce a refined food court in South Brooklyn, and Baz Luhrmann's train car for Belmond continues to attract attention.
