Netflix miniseries All the Light We Cannot See launches with accessible screening
Netflix has released a four-episode miniseries titled 'All the Light We Cannot See,' directed by Shawn Levy and based on Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. For its launch, Netflix partnered with Diversity Lab to organize an accessible preview of the first episode, featuring audio description and Italian subtitles for deaf and blind viewers. The story follows Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind teenager played by debut actress Aria Maria Loberti, who is also blind. Set during World War II in Paris and Saint-Malo, the plot involves Marie-Laure transmitting encrypted radio messages to the resistance. Her father Daniel LeBlanc, played by Mark Ruffalo, is a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History in Paris who builds her a model of their neighborhood and teaches her Braille. A German soldier Werner (Louis Hofmann), an expert in radio communications, becomes a regular listener. The series was filmed in Budapest and northern France, produced by 21 Laps Entertainment. Levy described the novel as a story of hope persisting against darkness and war.
