Neon Gallery's 30-Year Legacy Sparks Debate on Bologna's Art Institutions
A new publication titled "NO, NEON, NO CRY" (published by MAMbo) chronicles the 30-year history of Neon gallery in Bologna, which operated from 1981 to 2011. Founder Gino Gianuizzi describes the gallery as an "anomalous story" that emerged from the aftermath of the 1977 protests, presenting itself as a utopian space without a predetermined program. Neon functioned as a laboratory for ideas, supporting artists and curators alongside Francesca Alinovi and later Roberto Daolio. MAMbo dedicated an exhibition to Neon in summer 2022, marking 40 years since its inception. The gallery's role has recently sparked debate initiated by Mauro Felicori, Emilia Romagna's culture councilor, who noted on Facebook that no GAM director ever made Neon their gallery, despite Gianuizzi being Bologna's most original talent scout. Gianuizzi responded by criticizing Bologna's conservative spirit, claiming the administration neglects MAMbo, feigns disinterest in FICO's crisis, and prioritizes gastro-tourism. Carlo Terrosi echoed that Bologna has always been wary of alternative experiences, while Danilo Eccher questioned the urge to institutionalize creative adventures. Silvia Cini proposed giving Neon a public space free from institutional ties to continue its activity. The debate continues in Artribune.
