NEOM's The Line: A 170-km Vertical City in Saudi Arabia
The Line, a vertical city designed by NEOM in Saudi Arabia, will stretch 170 kilometers long and 200 meters wide, rising 500 meters above sea level in the Tabuk province. It will house 9 million residents across just 34 square kilometers, reducing infrastructure footprint. Powered entirely by renewable energy, the city operates on hyper-proximity: key services are within a five-minute walk, and a high-speed train connects endpoints in 20 minutes. Employing Zero Gravity Urbanism, homes, public spaces, schools, and workplaces are stacked vertically, eliminating the need for cars. The exterior features a mirror facade to blend with nature. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, chairman of NEOM, stated that The Line challenges traditional flat cities and addresses urban livability and environmental crises. NEOM leads a team of top architects, engineers, and builders to realize this vertical city concept.
