Neolithic Hall Replica Opens at Stonehenge as Learning Center
English Heritage has successfully created a full-scale replica of Durrington 68, a Neolithic structure dating back 4,500 years, which was found near Stonehenge in the 1960s. Known as the Kusuma Neolithic Hall, this building reaches over 20 feet in height and was built over nine months by over 100 volunteers utilizing only Neolithic tools and methods, such as coppiced wood and chalk daub. Funded by the Kusama Trust, the £1 million ($1.3 million) project is set to open this summer as an engaging educational space for school groups. Luke Winter, an experimental archaeologist, oversaw the reconstruction aimed at enhancing students' understanding of Neolithic life and carpentry. This hall marks the initial phase of a significant educational initiative by English Heritage at Stonehenge, which will also feature a discovery lab and learning studio expected to launch by the end of 2026. The organization anticipates welcoming around 100,000 students each year by the early 2030s. Matt Thompson, the learning director at English Heritage, described the hall as "a model for living history." Recent findings at Durrington Walls include the confirmation of a man-made ring of pits in late 2025 and isotope analysis of a cow's jawbone that connects the site to southwest Wales.
