Nendo's 7.5-Meter Origami Christmas Tree Animates Tokyo Midtown

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

For Christmas 2022, Tokyo design studio Nendo created a 7.5-meter white conical Christmas tree at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi. The tree features a polyhedral surface with 416 cutout decorations, each backed by an individually controlled fan that blows air to make the forms sway, float upward, and spin. The coordinated movements create a play of light and animate the cone. The same ornamental pieces decorate the gallery, garden terrace, and other atrium areas, following a theme of light and air. The tree and decorations evoke traditional Japanese origami, blending whiteness with movement and refraction to produce a warm, elegant, and magical atmosphere. The Western Christmas tradition is reinterpreted through distinctive Japanese design.
