NEMO survey reveals 75-80% revenue loss for European museums due to COVID-19
A survey by NEMO (Network of European Museum Organisations), founded in 1992, shows that 92% of 650 responding museums are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Major institutions like the Rijksmuseum, Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, and Museo Stedelijk are losing between €100,000 and €600,000 per week. Museums in tourist areas report 75-80% revenue loss. Most museums have not laid off staff, but 70% have shifted to smart working and suspended freelance contracts. Over 60% have increased online presence, with 40% seeing a rise in virtual visits. The survey, open until April 17, includes responses from 27 EU states, 9 Council of Europe members, the US, Philippines, Malaysia, French Polynesia, and Iran. Twelve countries are discussing emergency cultural funds, eight have them in place, and fifteen have none.
