Neil MacGregor to Depart British Museum in December 2015 After 13 Years

institutional · 2026-04-20

Neil MacGregor will resign as the Director of the British Museum at the end of December 2015, concluding his leadership that started in 2002. Under his guidance, the museum became the second most popular in the world, just behind the Louvre. His departure coincides with the recent opening of the World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre, along with strengthened partnerships with both UK and international museums. After he retires, MacGregor plans to remain active in various projects, including a BBC Radio 4 series called Faith and Society, chairing an advisory board for Germany's Minister of Culture, and working with Mumbai's CSMVS Museum. He’s also known for the series A History Of The World In 100 Objects. He feels it's the right moment to leave, given these significant developments.
