Negro Leagues' Impact on Baseball and Civil Rights
The Negro Leagues, formed in response to Major League Baseball's ban on Black players in the 1880s, became a source of dignity and hope. The first all-Black league started in 1887 but folded quickly. The official Negro National League was founded in 1920 by Andrew "Rube" Foster, who envisioned Black ownership and management. Stars like Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell emerged, often outshining MLB counterparts. Players faced grueling schedules, segregation, and low pay. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, leading to the leagues' decline as MLB signed away talent. The Negro National League folded in 1948; the Negro American League lasted into the early 1950s. In 2006, MLB held a draft for surviving Negro League players, and in 2020, MLB began including Negro League statistics in official records. Josh Gibson's .372 lifetime batting average now surpasses Ty Cobb's .367.
