Necchi Sewing Machine Museum Opens in Pavia

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A temporary museum dedicated to the iconic Necchi sewing machines has opened in Pavia, Italy, at Discover Pavia in Palazzo Broletto. Running from December 17, 2022, to April 30, 2023, the free exhibition showcases historic sewing machines, advertising posters, memorabilia, and models from a large archive. The museum celebrates the industrial history of Necchi, a company synonymous with sewing machines in Lombardy for decades. The exhibition focuses on entrepreneur Vittorio Necchi, whose family began in 1835 with cast iron radiators. His father Ambrogio built an 80,000-square-meter foundry in 1900, later known as Necchi-Campiglio. Vittorio separated Necchi from the family empire and revolutionized the industry through innovation and communication. The exhibition is divided into five thematic areas, including sewing machines, photos, documents, and objects from the voluntary association Necchi, Pavia, Italia, which also promotes the Supernova urban regeneration project to return the Necchi area to the city. The museum is part of a school-work alternation project called Necchi, Pavia e la Cultura nell’impresa responsabile, involving local technical institutes. Guided theatrical tours are offered, and in 2023, workshops on business culture will begin. Pavia Tourism Councillor Roberta Marcone stated that the project fits perfectly with Pavia becoming the Capital of Business Culture in 2023, highlighting Vittorio Necchi's legacy.
