Nebojša Despotović and Barbara De Vivi at Galleria Civica di Trento

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Galleria Civica di Trento presents a double exhibition featuring recent works by Nebojša Despotović (born 1982, Belgrade) and Barbara De Vivi (born 1992, Venice). Both artists trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and develop an intimate painting style using artificial acidic light and altered atmospheres. Despotović's solo show, 'Tutte le nostre vite,' explores personal relationships and collective identity through alien-like subjects in emotionally charged domestic settings. His large polyptych 'Nel giardino della mia vita' (2025) depicts a house with simultaneous room views, recalling a predella structure, with vibrant desaturated brushstrokes emphasizing gesture. Three self-portraits with his daughter close the exhibition, examining parental complexity. De Vivi's 'Due di due' references Andrea De Carlo's novel, focusing on doubling and superimposition. She uses poses performed by herself and restaged by her sister, creating a dialogue during separation. The term 'controfigura' (stand-in) appears in titles, exploring emotional states through another body. Her transparent layers render subjects ghostly, with traces of movement on canvas. A long paper sequence mixes religious symbols, modern art fragments, and social media imagery. The series 'Pressione' (2025) references Jean-Martin Charcot's photographs of Salpêtrière patients between ecstasy and hysteria.
