Neal Beggs' Climbing Installation at Zoogalerie

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Neal Beggs presented '1 adult pass' at Zoogalerie in Nantes from October 11 to December 10, 2001. The centerpiece, 'Move sideways', is a 15-meter-long wall painting with black letters on a white background and red climbing holds, created with a specialized company. Visitors can attempt the difficult climbing route. A video, 'Expressway', shows Beggs horizontally climbing a wall along a Glasgow motorway, revealing a tattoo of his birth year (1959) on his shoulder. The exhibition explores climbing as a vertical movement, referencing Pollock's dripping and conceptual art by Lawrence Weiner and Joseph Kosuth, while blurring art and life. Beggs, who climbs mountains and Glasgow towers, uses performance and objects to question art's boundaries. The exhibition precedes his solo show at Le Sous-Sol in Paris in May 2002.
