NEA terminates $50,000 grant for Jeffrey Gibson installation at MASS MoCA
In 2024, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) rescinded a $50,000 grant intended for Jeffrey Gibson's installation 'POWER FULL BECAUSE WE'RE DIFFERENT' at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). According to Kristy Edmunds, the museum's director, this decision stems from the current U.S. federal administration's "new priorities." The installation showcases seven large garments embellished with beads and found objects, featuring performances that invite participation from other Indigenous artists. Edmunds noted that numerous federal grants are being canceled. The NEA has revised its funding policy to align with the President's vision of promoting the nation’s artistic heritage. Additionally, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has also reduced funding, citing that it no longer aligns with U.S. interests. Edmunds described the funding cuts as "painful," emphasizing the loss of support from esteemed national agencies. The installation will be accessible until August 2026.
