Nazi Germany's Military and Economic Aid to Chinese Nationalists in Civil War
From 1927 to 1938, Nazi Germany provided significant military and economic assistance to the Chinese Nationalist government (Kuomintang, or KMT) during the Chinese Civil War. Germany sought to oppose communism and access Chinese resources, while the KMT aimed to modernize its army and economy. The cooperation began with a special mission in 1927 that sent German officers and businessmen to China. Colonel Max Bauer arrived in 1928 and advised direct arms purchases, while General Hans von Seeckt, arriving in 1931, introduced Blitzkrieg tactics and advocated for a small, well-equipped force. By the mid-1930s, Chiang Kai-shek sent his adopted son, Chiang Wei-Kuo, to train at a Wehrmacht academy, where he participated in the Nazi invasion of Austria in 1938. Economically, German firms invested in infrastructure, including Krupp AG and Siemens-Schuckertwerke supporting the Wuhan-Guangzhou Railway, and IG Farben and Bayer establishing chemical plants. In 1936, Nazi Germany extended a 100-million Reichsmark credit line to China. The assistance proved effective during the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, where German-trained Chinese troops delayed Japanese forces. However, when the KMT formed the Second United Front with the CCP in 1937 to resist Japan, Hitler chose Japan as his ally, and in 1938, Germany suspended its assistance mission, ending the cooperation.
