Nazareth Pacheco's Autobiographical Exhibition 'Registros/Records' Opens at Galeria Kogan Amaro

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Nazareth Pacheco presents 'Registros/Records' at Galeria Kogan Amaro in São Paulo, an exhibition born from profound personal loss and physical transformation. The artist's parents both died from lung cancer in recent years, an event that redirected her creative focus inward. While dismantling their home, she discovered materials—her father's medical instruments and her mother's nightgowns—which she transformed into the series 'Dele' and the work 'Vida'. Born in 1961 with a congenital condition requiring multiple corrective surgeries, Pacheco faced new orthopedic procedures after her father's death, paralleling childhood experiences. She also elected for aesthetic surgeries, documented in the portrait series 'Momentos', viewing bodily care as a form of grief processing linked to her parents' lifelong advocacy for her physical improvement. The exhibition revisits themes from her 1990s work dealing with the body, such as the 1993 installation 'Objetos Aprisionados'. New pieces include 'Embala', a collage of medicine boxes, and 'Registros', a sculptural waterfall made from her parents' X-rays. A companion book, organized by Regina Teixeira da Costa, launches with the exhibition, featuring critical texts by Marcus Lontra, Moacir dos Anjos, Tadeu Chiarelli, and Cauê Alves, alongside a detailed chronology of Pacheco's life illustrated with family photos. The show runs until June 15.
