Navid Nuur's century-long exhibition at Oude Kerk Amsterdam
Navid Nuur, born in Tehran in 1976, will unveil 'When Doubt Turns into Destiny' at Amsterdam's Oude Kerk from 7 September 2024 to 9 February 2025, with a significant aspect lasting until 2125. This marks Nuur's inaugural large-scale project outside of a museum context. The exhibition removes layers of history from Amsterdam's oldest structure to emphasize current sensory experiences. Nuur's creations delve into themes of light, time, space, and physical-chemical processes, utilizing transformations of natural materials. A pivotal feature includes Nuur crafting one hundred vessels from clay mixed with local raw materials and minerals, which will be made publicly at the church. Post-exhibition, these vases will be housed in the IJzeren Kapel, historically Amsterdam's city vault, which will resume this role in 2025. Annually, one vase, referred to as a 'treasure,' will be awarded to a donor supporting the Oude Kerk. The exhibition will wrap up in 2125, coinciding with the departure of all vases. Nuur perceives doubt and uncertainty as drivers of transformation, prompting reflections on humanity's role in an ever-evolving world.
