National Theatre marks 50 years on South Bank with installation and apprenticeship

In October 2026, the National Theatre will commemorate 50 years at its South Bank location with a complimentary outdoor exhibit named 'Stories Start Here: 50 Stories for 50 Years,' situated on the Queen's Walk. The installation, crafted by the collective la cuarta piel and co-curated by Financial Times theatre critic Sarah Hemming, features a wooden design that reflects the amphitheatre seating of the Olivier Theatre, facing the iconic building. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear narratives from various contributors, including actors and staff. An internal story station will produce tales on eco-friendly paper, with audio recordings accessible via the Bloomberg Connects app. The Grade II listed brutalist structure, created by Sir Denys Lasdun between 1969 and 1976, initially sparked mixed reactions. Additionally, an apprenticeship program named after Lasdun will focus on mechanical and electrical engineering skills, facilitated through the NT Skills Centre in collaboration with Bank of America. Executive director Kate Varah emphasized the pressing need for capital and modernization. The anniversary event is backed by Arup and Sir Robert McAlpine, both of whom participated in the theatre's original construction. Indhu Rubasingham, director and co-chief executive, highlighted the venue as a hub for shared stories among artists, audiences, and communities. Prior to its current location, the company spent 13 years at the Old Vic.
