exhibition · 2026-05-04

Nine years after his death, the National Portrait Gallery in London is staging a major exhibition titled 'Michael Jackson – On the Wall', curated by Nicholas Cullinan. The show runs from June 28 to October 21, 2018, at St. Martin's Place. It features works by over forty artists, including Andy Warhol's iconic 1982 portrait of Jackson. The exhibition explores Jackson's complex persona, his childhood as a prodigy with the Jackson Five under an authoritarian father, his identification with Peter Pan, and his troubled relationship with fame and media scrutiny. Jackson, who died from propofol intoxication in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009, was born in Gary, Indiana on August 29, 1958. The exhibition also touches on controversies surrounding his skin color and child abuse allegations.
