National Photography Museum to Open at Triennale Milano

institutional · 2026-04-27

Italian Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini announced the creation of a National Museum of Photography within the spaces of Triennale Milano. The project will involve MUFOCO (Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea), which holds an archive of 2 million images, 455 authors, and 34 online funds, focusing on post-war and contemporary photography. MUFOCO's archives will be moved to Triennale, which will dedicate 1,500 square meters to photography and archives, while maintaining a relationship with Villa Ghirlanda in Cinisello Balsamo for ongoing exhibitions. Triennale President Stefano Boeri described the museum as a "variable geometry" institution, with spaces in both Cinisello Balsamo and Milan, awaiting a permanent iconic venue. The initiative aims to fill a long-standing gap in Italy's cultural landscape, following the establishment of the Italian Design Museum at Triennale in 2019.
