National Maritime Museum to display early British report of American independence in 2026
On 15 June 2026, the National Maritime Museum will unveil a unique temporary exhibition that may include some of the earliest British perspectives on American independence. This complimentary showcase commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted on 4 July 1776. Key elements of the exhibit include a letter from 10 July 1776 and a handwritten version of the Declaration, both addressed to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich and First Lord of the Admiralty, by Vice-Admiral Molyneux Shuldham.
