National Gallery to Stage First Exhibition of 20th-Century German Paintings

The National Gallery in London will present its first exhibition of modern German paintings, focusing on the Expressionist movement from 1900 to 1918. Titled 'German Expressionism: Modern Painting 1900-1918', the show will feature works from both Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter groups, marking the first UK and Ireland exhibition to cover both collectives since the 1960s. The exhibition will run in London in spring 2027 before traveling to the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin in autumn 2027. The show highlights radical artists from Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and elsewhere who experimented with form and brushwork, breaking new ground in 20th-century painting. This exhibition coincides with the National Gallery's expansion into 20th-century art.
