National Gallery Singapore rehangs permanent collection for SG60 anniversary with expanded narratives
To commemorate Singapore's 60th anniversary of independence, the National Gallery Singapore has revamped its exhibition titled 'Singapore Stories: Pathways and Detours in Art.' This showcase features approximately 350 artworks spanning from the 19th century to the present, with more than 75% of the pieces being newly displayed. Female artists now represent 23% of the exhibition, while minority artists account for 24%. Highlights include Dominique Hui’s 1992 mural 'Statue of Liberty' and Lim Hak Tai's 1955 work 'Indian Workers Clearing the Jungle.' Critics have pointed out the absence of contentious works such as Josef Ng's 'Brother Cane' and alternative art venues. Conversely, the private exhibition 'Artist's Proof: Singapore at 60' offers critical viewpoints, alongside other SG60 exhibitions like STPI's 'Material Moves' and Fost Gallery's 'The Lie of the Land: Sediments.'
