National Gallery Singapore Launches Free Online Course on Southeast Asian Art and Environment
The National Gallery Singapore has unveiled 'Making in a Changing World,' the concluding part of its complimentary online course series titled 'Art and the Environment in Southeast Asia.' This five-week program examines how regional artists engage with environmental changes through community-oriented and location-specific practices. Featured creators include Art Labor from Vietnam, Malaysia's Sharon Chin, Cambodia's Sopheap Pich, and Singapore's Robert Zhao Renhui. The course offers unique interviews, academic materials, and interactive discussions. Notable elements include Sharon Chin's ritual at Port Dickson beaches, Robert Zhao Renhui's 'Seeing Forest' (2024) for the 60th Venice Biennale, Art Labor's 'Angin Cloud' (2025) in Vietnam, and Sopheap Pich's innovative use of materials in Cambodia. This free course finalizes a series that also encompasses 'Environment as Contested Space' and 'Landscape as Ideology.' As the first national arts institution in the region to provide online courses on Southeast Asian art, the National Gallery Singapore boasts the largest public collection of modern art from Singapore and Southeast Asia.
