National Gallery London Unveils NG200 Plans for Bicentennial

institutional · 2026-04-27

The National Gallery in London is preparing for its 200th anniversary in 2024 with a series of initiatives under the NG200 program. The museum, opened in 1824, houses works from the late 13th to early 20th centuries by artists including Bellini, Cézanne, Degas, Leonardo, Monet, Raphael, Rembrandt, Renoir, Rubens, Titian, Turner, van Dyck, van Gogh, and Velázquez. Plans include completing renovations at Trafalgar Square to improve visitor services and creating a new research center, likely in the historic Wilkins Building, dedicated to the study, conservation, and dissemination of old master paintings. An international call has been launched for a multidisciplinary design team, with selection in two phases: an open call for expressions of interest, followed by five finalists presenting detailed design approaches. A first meeting with teams is scheduled for July 2021. Director Gabriele Finaldi emphasized the need for resilience post-pandemic, noting the catastrophic effect on visitor numbers and the role of art in national recovery. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden stated that culture will play a central role in the nation's recovery, with global icons like the National Gallery helping to build back better.
