National Gallery London to Present Monochrome: Painting in Black and White

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The National Gallery in London will host the exhibition 'Monochrome: Painting in Black and White' from October 30, 2017, to February 18, 2018. The show traces 700 years of art history through 50 works that abandon color for black and white. It juxtaposes Old Masters such as Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres with contemporary artists including Gerhard Richter, Chuck Close, and Bridget Riley. A highlight is Olafur Eliasson's immersive installation 'Room for one colour' (1997). The press opening is scheduled for October 26, 2017.
