National Gallery London publishes 275 masterpieces in new book
The National Gallery in London has released a comprehensive volume titled 'The National Gallery. Masterpieces of Painting', edited by director Gabriele Finaldi and distributed by Yale University Press. The book presents 275 paintings from the museum's collection, spanning from medieval Italian altarpieces to 20th-century works. Finaldi, who returned to the National Gallery as director in 2015 after a tenure at the Prado in Madrid, previously worked at the institution from 1992 to 2002. Under his leadership, the gallery acquired Artemisia Gentileschi's 'Self-Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria' in 2019, the first work by an old female painter added to the collection since Rachel Ruysch's flower composition in 1974. The volume covers artists from Margarito d'Arezzo, Cimabue, Duccio, Giotto, and Masaccio through Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Paolo Uccello, Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Piero della Francesca, Dirk Bouts, Antonello da Messina, Perugino, Hans Memling, Botticelli, Carlo Crivelli, Dürer, and Leonardo da Vinci. The book is priced at £50 and available through the National Gallery and Yale University Press.
