National Gallery London Launches Bicentennial Celebrations with Nationwide Art Loans

institutional · 2026-04-26

The National Gallery in London has kicked off its 200th-anniversary celebrations, commemorating its establishment on May 10, 1824, through the NG200 program, which encompasses various exhibitions, performances, and events. A highlight of the festivities is National Treasures, which features 12 iconic artworks, such as Botticelli's 'Venus and Mars,' currently on loan at the Fitzwilliam Museum until September 10, alongside pieces by Canaletto, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Caravaggio displayed in different UK museums. The celebrations also include light projections, a children-led art festival in Trafalgar Square, and an Art Road Trip with workshops. Renovations by Annabelle Selldorf's studio face delays due to archaeological discoveries. Future exhibitions will showcase van Gogh in September 2024 and the Sienese School in 2025.
