National Gallery displays four Dutch and Flemish works from Van Dedem bequest

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The National Gallery in London has put on public display four paintings by Dutch and Flemish artists Adriaen Coorte, David Teniers the Younger, and Jan van Kessel the Elder, part of a bequest from the late Willem Baron van Dedem, former president of TEFAF Maastricht. Van Dedem, who died in 2015 at age 86, had promised the works to the museum to fill gaps in its collection. The paintings were selected from his collection of about 80 Dutch Golden Age works. Bart Cornelis, curator of Dutch and Flemish paintings at the National Gallery, noted that the Coorte and van Kessel works are the first by these artists to enter the museum's holdings, while the Teniers piece depicts a Passion scene set in 17th-century Flanders. Van Dedem also made generous gifts to the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis.
