Nathaniel Mellors' Neanderthal Interview at Museo Burel

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Museo Burel in Belluno presents 'ME UOMO', a solo exhibition by British artist Nathaniel Mellors (born 1974, Doncaster). The show centers on his 2014 video 'The sophisticated Neanderthal interview', set in Bronson Canyon, Los Angeles. The work features a dialogue between a modern explorer and a Neanderthal whose body grew in different temporal segments, with a 20,000-year gap between his lower limbs and head, likened to tree growth. The Neanderthal serves as a sarcastic metaphor for the contemporary artist and a Nietzschean superman, ultimately more enlightened than the explorer. The exhibition continues the museum's mission, started with Luca De Leva, to explore perceptions of the other. Museum director Daniela Zangrando aims to offer a new vision for the Belluno region. Mellors previously showed animatronic installations at the 2011 and 2017 Venice Biennales.
