Nathan Oliveira's Spiritual Centeredness Emerges in DC Moore Gallery Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From March 8 to April 9, 2005, DC Moore Gallery in New York presented recent paintings by Nathan Oliveira, showcasing a new economy of description in his work. The exhibition featured ten medium and large canvases depicting solitary figures in reddish-orange spaces, with backgrounds created through drizzled washes and agitated strokes. Oliveira's artistic journey began in Oakland in 1928, where he experienced San Francisco's postwar art scene and studied under Max Beckmann. Influenced by Bay Area Figurative Painting and his friendship with Richard Diebenkorn, his early work displayed anxious soulfulness with ragged textures and empty backgrounds. During the 1960s, painter's block led him to explore monotypes before returning to painting with themes of transformation and transcendence. Recent works at DC Moore included figures balancing on rocking-chair arcs, symmetrical pairs advancing toward viewers, and a nude man wearing ice skates. His virtuosic texture work was particularly evident in "Nude Standing on a Rock" (2005), where blended tones illuminated a columnar female form. The exhibition also included a dozen watercolors, such as "Imi 72" (1989), where Oliveira demonstrated exhilarating directness on buckling paper. His artistic influences ranged from Rembrandt and Francisco Goya to Edvard Munch and Alberto Giacometti, with comparisons drawn to Giacometti's rhythmic investigations of observed reality.
