Nasser Al Salem's Minimalist Calligraphy Exhibition at ATHR Gallery in Riyadh

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Nasser Al Salem's solo exhibition "The Edge of Language" opened at ATHR Gallery in Riyadh's JAX warehouse district. The 41-year-old artist redefines Arabic calligraphy through minimalist steel wire abstractions that visualize everyday gossip and digital chatter. Al Salem gained international recognition when his work appeared in the British Museum's 2012 exhibition "Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam," which led to the museum acquiring his 2010 piece Zamzam—a calligraphic representation of a water well in Mecca's Masjid al-Haram. In 2013, he was shortlisted for the Jameel Art Prize, a £25,000 biennial award presented by the Victoria and Albert Museum and Art Jameel for artists inspired by Islamic traditions. Subsequent opportunities included a 2018 residency at Delfina Foundation and a 2019 KAUST–Swiss Residency at ETH Zurich. During a visit to the exhibition, Al Salem and his brother Suliman personally guided a tour before inviting the visitor to their shared studio. The exhibition was viewed during a layover in Riyadh following attendance at Jeddah's Islamic Arts Biennale, which surveyed over two millennia of Middle Eastern art history.
