Nasan Tur's 'Memory as Resistance' at Fondazione Pini in Milan

exhibition · 2026-05-05

German-Turkish artist Nasan Tur (born 1974 in Offenbach, lives in Berlin) presents 'Memory as Resistance', a site-specific intervention at Fondazione Adolfo Pini in Milan, curated by Gabi Scardi. The exhibition explores memory and the individual's role in society through a series of photographs and a video portrait set against the Bosphorus. Tur's work responds to the unique, non-white-cube environment of the foundation, which he describes as a place of production and dialogue rather than conservation. The display includes small vitrines containing photographs of journalists killed for their investigative work, symbolizing the 'fourth estate', alongside a video showing the crumpling and expanding of the photos. Among the depicted figures is Hrant Dink, a prominent Turkish-Armenian intellectual assassinated in 2007. Tur reflects on the role of photography as a medium that blurs fiction and reality, and on the need for empathy and humanism in a globalized world. He co-founded an initiative in Germany supporting artists in exile. Future projects include a book in Germany (January 2018), a solo show at Deweer Gallery in Belgium (March 2018), and an institutional exhibition at Pori Art Museum in Finland (autumn 2018), his first in Scandinavia.
