NASA Unveils Three-Phase Moon Base Plan, Crewed by 2032

other · 2026-05-27

NASA has unveiled a revised strategy for establishing a lasting lunar base, employing a phased approach that aims for semi-permanent habitation post-2032. This base will be situated at the moon's South Pole, selected for its scientific significance and ample sunlight for solar energy. In 2029, the first phase will send four tons of payload for robotic exploration. The second phase will introduce initial habitation components, solar and nuclear energy, up to 24 landings, and permanent communication systems. Beginning in 2032, phase three will initiate crew rotations and ongoing surface operations, making lunar living feasible. Spanish NASA administrator Carlos García-Galán will oversee the program, which will collaborate with international and commercial partners, following the successful Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar flight since Apollo 17 in 1972.
