Napoli's Materdei and Sanità neighborhoods: an art and culture itinerary
An itinerary through the Materdei and Sanità neighborhoods of Naples highlights key cultural sites. In Materdei, dubbed the 'art district' by Peppe Morra, are Casa Morra, the Museo Hermann Nitsch, the Shozo Shimamoto Association, and Vigna San Martino. At Montesanto, a former tufa cave now houses a florist and art space programmed by surgeon-artist Antonio Della Corte since November 2018. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe a Pontecorvo, a Baroque gem completed by Cosimo Fanzago in 1660, features a double facade and once held a Luca Giordano painting now at Capodimonte. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale, directed by Paolo Giulierini, displays collections and a Massimo Pacifico photography exhibition until January 6. The Cimitero delle Fontanelle, a former tufa quarry and plague burial site, was later organized by a priest. Bar Forza Napoli offers intense football fandom, with debates likely if mentioning Maurizio Sarri. The Catacombe di San Gaudioso, beneath the Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità, are early Christian catacombs where Saint Gaudiosus was buried in the mid-5th century. Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi, run by Ciro Oliva (fourth generation), continues the family's fried pizza tradition. Isabella De Cham serves fried pizza with an all-female staff, focusing on flours and innovative fillings.
