Napoli Contemporanea 2024: Marinella Senatore inaugura l'edizione post-Venere degli Stracci

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Napoli Contemporanea, the city's diffuse public art project, returns for its 2024 edition starting July 25, following the devastating fire that destroyed Michelangelo Pistoletto's "Venere degli Stracci" in July 2023. The new edition opens with Marinella Senatore's installation "Io contengo moltitudini" at Rotonda Diaz, created in dialogue with local associations, citizens, and the Scampia art institute. Curator Vincenzo Trione, who recently won the Viareggio-Rèpaci literary prize for his book "Prologo Celeste," outlined further plans: a permanent new location for the restored Venere within a month, the opening of Europe's first museum of the image at the Pan in about 18 months, and site-specific contemporary art installations in the hypogea under Piazza del Plebiscito next year. In October, a posthumous work by Gaetano Pesce will be installed at Piazza del Municipio, designed with curator Silvana Annichiarico. All works become part of the city's heritage. The 2023 edition also featured Antonio Marras in the historic center. The project aims to bring contemporary art into public spaces and foster community engagement, as evidenced by the successful crowdfunding campaign led by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi that resurrected the Venere in March 2024.
