Naples' Piazza Municipio to Open Archaeological Park and Museum Gallery by 2026
Naples' Piazza Municipio is set to transform by 2026 with the opening of an Archaeological Park along the perimeter of Maschio Angioino, directly connected to the metro station. The park, featuring green pathways among archaeological remains and walls spanning from classical antiquity to the 20th century, will be free to the public. Additionally, a new Museum Gallery inside the metro station will display artifacts unearthed during years of excavation for the railway line, including ceramics, ropes, leather, anchors, and ship instruments from four Roman-era boats. The project, approved by the city council in July 2025 on the proposal of infrastructure councilor Edoardo Cosenza, aims to create an international cultural hub in the Mediterranean. Architects Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto De Moura, who designed the Piazza Municipio metro station (opened 2015) and the archaeological underpass (completed 2023), are leading the project with Studio DAZ architetti associati. The recently launched construction site, funded by the Ministry of Culture and the Metropolitan City of Naples (€1.5 million), will last ten months and includes over 1,700 square meters of green areas, 25 new trees, a new elevator in the Aragonese Tower, and redevelopment of Via Vittorio Emanuele III with lava stone sidewalks and tactile paths for the visually impaired.
