Naples Metro Art Stations: A Journey Through Five Underground Museums
The recent opening of Line 6 of the Naples metro provides an opportunity to examine how the city's approach to underground public transport has evolved over the past two decades, particularly through the Stazioni dell'Arte (Art Stations) program. Launched in 2001, this initiative aims to rehabilitate public spaces by giving each station a distinct architectural identity and integrating contemporary art, including site-specific works. A video tour highlights five stations—Università, Toledo, Museo, Dante (all on Line 1), and the newly inaugurated San Pasquale—built by construction and civil engineering group Webuild. These stations are among fourteen built by Webuild in Naples, which is currently constructing the Capodichino station on Line 1 and the Monte Sant'Angelo branch (Line 7). Designers involved include Gae Aulenti, Karim Rashid, Oscar Tusquets Blanca, and Boris Podrecca. The stations and their requalified public spaces exemplify 'building with beauty.'
