Naples inaugurates first outdoor cultural alley with street art and free library

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Vicolo della Cultura (Alley of Culture) has been inaugurated in Naples' Rione Sanità district, transforming Via Montesilvano into the city's first outdoor cultural hub. The project revives an 18th-century tradition by Father Gregorio Rocco, who installed illuminated Madonna images as the first public urban lighting. Now, ancient votive niches become book-sharing points, surrounded by street art by Mario Schiano and Gianluca Raro, funded by Round Table, Rotaract Napoli, and Rotaract Napoli Ovest. The initiative is supported by Opportunity Onlus, Italy's youngest non-profit, which repurposes Camorra-confiscated properties into schools and recreational centers, and coffee company Toraldo, whose campaign "Toraldo t'accumpagna" echoes the Neapolitan saying "a maronn t'accumpagna." At the December 21 inauguration, Neapolitan writers including Lorenzo Marone donated books to the open-air library. Toraldo delegate Stefania Simonetti stated, "Collaborating with such young and active non-profits is one of the many ways to practice beauty. We are proud to be partners. Naples doesn't need heroes, but people and companies that invest in youth and culture."
