Naples' Doll Hospital: A Museum Where Toys Are Cured
In the historic center of Naples, the Ospedale delle Bambole (Doll Hospital) has been restoring toys since the 1800s. Founded by set designer Luigi Grassi in the late 19th century, it began as a small workshop on Via San Biagio dei Librai (Spaccanapoli). Grassi collected broken toy parts and repaired them, eventually naming his shop with a hand-painted red sign that remains the museum's logo. Now run by fourth-generation restorer Tiziana Grassi, the institution has moved to a new location in the courtyard of Palazzo Marigliano, near the original shop. The museum spans 180 square meters with dedicated departments: Admission, Emergency, Stuffed Animal Veterinary Clinic, Donation, Dressing, Sacred Restoration, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and more. Each toy receives a medical record and is treated with materials like eyes, arms, legs, hair, makeup, and casts. Once restored, toys await pickup or are shipped via regular mail. The new space aims to educate young people about tradition and craftsmanship, involving students in educational projects and cultural events. The museum showcases a historic archive accumulated over generations, preserving a unique Neapolitan tradition.
